About Dental Crowns
Dental crowns are one of dentistry’s longest-standing restorative treatments. A dental crown is a metal, porcelain, resin, or ceramic covering that fits over a tooth damaged from decay, trauma, or wear over time.
A traditional dental crown is designed to fit snuggly over the entire top of the tooth with the grooves and cusps that normal teeth have so that they can function virtually as normal teeth. With proper care, a crown can restore and protect a tooth for 5-15 years.
Why are dental crowns placed?
WHAT DENTAL CROWNS ARE USED FOR
Dental crowns are used for both restorative and cosmetic procedures in order to treat a variety of dental issues and conditions. Some common uses of dental crowns include:
-
Treat worn, broken or decayed teeth
-
Protect teeth from wear and tear
-
Improve chewing function
WHO MAY BENEFIT FROM A DENTAL CROWN
Patients who are suffering from cracked, worn or decayed teeth may benefit from a dental crown at our Seattle dental office. Additionally, some patients with worn or metal crowns may benefit from the cosmetic improvements of a tooth-colored crown, which can enhance the appearance of your smile and provide long-term benefits to your dental health.
How is a dental crown placed?
Placing a dental crown typically requires more than one visit to your dentist.
EXAMINATION AND TREATMENT PLANNING
Before recommending a dental crown, Dr. EmmaLeigh Gordon thoroughly evaluates the damaged or decayed tooth with digital x-rays and examination. In some cases, a root canal procedure may be required prior to the placement of a dental crown.
PREPARING THE TOOTH AND CROWN
Following the examination and any prerequisite procedures, the next step is to prepare the tooth for crown placement. The dentist prepares the tooth for dental crown placement by filing it down to make room for the crown. An impression is of the filed-down tooth and surrounding teeth is made and sent off to a dental lab for the perfect crown fitting. Seattle dentist, Dr. Gordon, will then place a temporary crown to protect your prepared tooth while the custom crown is being milled.
PLACING THE DENTAL CROWN
To place the crown, the dentist removes the temporary crown and checks the newly arrived permanent crown for fit and color. Patients are given a form of anesthesia to minimize discomfort during the placement procedure. The crown is then cemented into its permanent place.
How To Care for A Dental Crown
Traditional dental crowns do not require extra care. Good oral hygiene habits include brushing twice daily and flossing daily, especially around the crown area where the gum meets the tooth. Although crowns are considered permanent, caring for your crown is important to make it last as long as possible.
